☀️ Stay Safe During Extreme Heat
When temperatures soar, a few simple precautions can help keep you and your family safe.
🌡️ Stay Hydrated
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day—even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Avoid excessive alcohol and sugary drinks, which can contribute to dehydration.
🏠 Keep Your Home Cool
- Close blinds and curtains during the hottest part of the day.
- Use ceiling fans to circulate air, but remember they don’t lower the room temperature.
- Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature and avoid constantly adjusting it.
👕 Dress for the Weather
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.
🌳 Limit Outdoor Activities
- Schedule yard work and exercise for early morning or evening.
- Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
👶🐶 Never Leave Anyone in a Parked Car
- Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes—even with the windows cracked.
- Always check the back seat before locking your vehicle.
👵 Check on Family & Neighbors
- Older adults, infants, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions are at the highest risk.
- Make sure they have access to air conditioning and plenty of fluids.
🔥 Know the Warning Signs
Seek immediate medical attention if someone experiences:
- Confusion or loss of consciousness
- Hot, dry skin or very high body temperature
- Rapid pulse
- Severe dizziness or difficulty breathing
Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, and muscle cramps. Move to a cool place, drink water, and cool the body immediately.
❄️ Give Your Air Conditioner a Break
- Replace or clean your air filter.
- Keep vents open and unobstructed.
- Avoid using ovens and dryers during the hottest part of the day.
- If your AC isn’t keeping up, call for service before it becomes an emergency.
